Elevated Prayer Series, Part 28: ومن شر فتنة المسيح الدجال

The final part of the supplication that we recite before we conclude the prayer is, ومن شر فتنة المسيح الدجال **, “**and from the evil trial of al-Masijh ad-Dajjal - the false Messiah.”

The word المسيح comes from the root meaning of wiping or removing something. The false messiah was so called due to the narrations from the Prophet (peace be upon him), that he will be blind - ممسوح - in one eye.

And the word الدجال comes from the meaning of smearing something with tar, or to deliberately confound or confuse matters by being vague and ambigous. The name Dajjal was thus applied to the false messiah because he will conceal his disbelief from the people by lying to them, deceiving them, confusing them, and thoroughly clouding their hearts and minds, as though applying tar.

Through this supplication we have comprehensively asked Allah to protect us from the trials of life, at the time of death, and after our death, mentioning the general along with the specific, and ending with what has been reported to be the greatest trial on the face of the earth since Adam (peace be upon him) was created until the Day of Judgement. These four trials are said to be the summation of all evil - may Allaah protect us from them all - ameen.
