Elevated Prayer Series, Part 6: وتعالى جدك

The opening supplication - دعاء الاستفتاح - continues with the words وتعالى جدك, often translated as ‘And Exalted is Your Majesty,’ and we see that once again the translation conceals the depths of beauty contained in this phrase.

The word تعالى is an intensive pattern that indicates the heights of ascendency and elevation. And in this phrase, it is being used to describe the word جدك - Your Greatness. The scholars mentioned that the جد of Allah encompasses His acts, commands, powers, favours, majesty, resolve and decree. So the phrase indicates that all of these elements that come under the umbrella of Allah’s Greatness, have reached the heights of ascendency and exaltedness.

So when we say وتعالى جدك we are essentially saying, “O Allah, I also acknowledge that your greatness has risen and ascended above all greatness, and Your status is elevated above all else, and Your authority is supreme over all sovereignty.”
