Surah al-Asr emphasises, above all else, the importance of utilising time wisely.
The word ‘asr comes from the root ع ص ر ‘ayn Saad raa’, the main signification of which is pressing or squeezing out, (and hence the word عصير ‘aseer, meaning juice).
So what is the relationship between time, and juice?
Some linguists have noted that the word ‘asr refers to an unlimited duration of time during which people pass away and become extinct; a time in which people have, essentially, been squeezed out of this dunya. Or that the time itself - the limited time that we have, that we must utilise to do good deeds - is slowly being squeezed away until the time will be no more.
And Allah knows best.
