Allah’s blessings:
Allah says in Surah al-Nahl, verse 18,
وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَآ
And if you should count the blessings of Allāh, you could not enumerate them.
Most English translations of this verse show the word نِعْمَةَ translated in the plural – favours/blessings/bounties. Yet in the Arabic, Allah has used the word in its singular form, even though it is clearly the plural meaning that is being referred to.
One reason for this is that the usage of the singular connotes that it is impossible to even enumerate all of the blessings of Allah that are inherent within even a single blessing.
For instance, we often thank Allah for blessing us with our ‘food’, but even within that lies the numerous blessings of the creation of the original seed, its planting, sowing, harvesting – how many hands laboured on it until it reached the form it took when we consumed it?
And after consuming it, the blessings of each part of our digestive system working perfectly together to extract the nutrition from the food and discard the waste byproducts.
For every single blessing for which we thank Allah lies a whole infrastructure of other blessings, so there is not even a single blessing – in the singular – that we could possibly thank Allah for completely.
